This is Marco Palos, a great saxophone player with Louie Prima and The Witnesses. Louie and his band appeared several times on the floating stage in Bemus Point. Their signature closing number was always When the Saints Go Marching In.  They played it while coming off the floating stage through the audience and back onto the floating stage without missing a musical beat during that entire route.  It sure got the crowd involved with what is called .. audience participation!

Marco is known as "The Sax Machine" in the entertainment world.  HIS -TORY is that Marco was born in the heart of Los Angeles.  He came into a music loving famiy and grew up listening to a variety of classic music from the 1920's all the way to the 60's. He first started playing music at the age of 4. As the years passed he learned to play the keyboard and guitar though it was when Marco was in the 5th grade that an elementary school crush inspired him to play the saxophone.  He wanted to start playing right away, but his parents needed to save up in order to buy him his first saxophone.  Marco learned how to play the French Horn in the first months of 6th grade though 4 months into the 6th grade, Marco received a giant brown box from the UPS man.  Inside he found his first saxophone .. a Yamaha YAS-23.  From the moment he put it together and played it for the very first time he was able to play along with The Glenn Miller Orchestra on his favorite AM radio station Stardust 910.  His notes weren't always spot on, but he gave it his best and was determined to play like these musicians one day.  The very next day he gladly carried that wretched French Horn case to school for the very last time.  It was the start of a beautifiul relationship with his Yamaha saxophone.

Hours were spent learning songs by Stevie Wonder; Earth, Wind and Fire and Tower of Power.  In 2002 after attending a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy concert, inspiration struck young Marco.  Later that Fall he became one of the founding members of Phat Cat Swinger, a 9 piece swing band.  The rest is history!

When asked about his favorite memories in music, Marco says being invited to play the Playboy Mansion in 2009 with Phat Cat Swinger and his first New Orleans trip with Louie Prima and The Witnesses are among his favorite memories.  Marco is also an entertainer at Disneyland. The above photo features Marco at Disneyland with the face of Mickey Mouse looking over his shoulder.

"I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to make and share music with people on a daily basis.  As long as I can keep making people smile and help them escape to a happier place, I will keep on performing 'til my body no longer lets me stand."

Louie Prima, Jr. is a Las Vegas based entertainer, singer and songwriter.  He bridges the music gap between swing and rock eras.  Many years after Louie Prima, Sr. died his son revitalized the legacy with a reimaging of his music.

Born 4 days before Father's Day in 1965 Louie, Jr. is the youngest child and only son of musician and entertainer, Louis Prima.  Gia Maione began performing with her husband in 1962.  Through the years Louie, Jr. shared the stage with his father starting at the age of 5 at the Sands Hotel on the Vegas strip.  Audiences could hear the announcer say, "and now, the man who plays pretty for the people...Louie Prima!"

Louie, Jr. grew up on the outskirts of Vegas on his dad's golf course, Fairway to the Stars and spent 2 summers at his grandparent's home in Toms River NJ.  Louie's grandfather, Tom Maione, owned the Red Top Bar on the boardwalk at Seaside Heights NJ.

The early 70's saw the Vegas landscape changing and Sr. took a residency in New Orleans moving the family with him.  It was there that Jr. first learned to play the piano.   In junior high school, he chose band as an elective and told his mother he wanted to learn to play the trumpet. He continued playing through high school and cites his band directors as major influences in his life. His high school band marched in both the Fiesta Bowl and the Sun Bowl.

On July 10, 2010 the year Louis Sr. would have turned 100 his son was present when his father was given, posthumously, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Prima, Jr. accepted the star on his father's behalf and then he "shook the pavement" as the band performed a rousing homage to his father.

An interesting fact is his band has recorded at Capitol Records in the exact same studio where his father and mother recorded. Moving the music forward as his father did the band recorded original material as well as a couple of surprises which were released on June 10, 2014.

Louie Prima, Sr. would be proud of his namesake and all that his son has accomplished by passing along a musical family legacy for all of us to enjoy including a few Sunday afternoon Pops concerts on the floating stage in Bemus Point.

This is "Barbra Streisand" and "Neil Diamond" posing with your Maestro Muse writer.  It was taken after their amazing Chautauqua Lake Pops show last summer.
Barbra is elegantly portrayed by Sharon Owens and Neil is handsomely portrayed by Gary Gomez.

The Diamond Project Band is dedicated to performing a true replication of the musical styling of a live Neil Diamond concert.  Rather than give the audience a straight studio version of Neil's classics, they strive to incorporate the excitement, energy and musicianship that only a live show can provide. They leave audiences with the satisfaction that they have experienced a true and well deserved tribute to one of America's foremost talents .. Neil Diamond!  Gary did not disappoint last summer nor did he disappoint when he brought his show to the floating stage many times in Bemus Point NY.

The Diamond Project is America's best Neil Diamond tribute band. A ten-piece ensemble that includes some of Ohio's most accomplished musicians.

The Diamond Project Band is on Facebook and there you will find a beautiful video of "Neil" singing September Morning with his personal message .. Stay well everyone. Peace and Love.

Sharon Owens as the legendary Ms. Streisand lives in Las Vegas Nevada.  Upon graduating from high school in 1984, Ms. Owens began her journey into the real world of touring with American Entertainment Company in Columbus Ohio.  After a year on the road opening for country acts such as the Mandrell Sisters, the Letterman and Willie Nelson, Sharon decided to stop and get her education before returning to the world of entertainment. Sharon never realized that she would become a pioneer in the tribute business.  Unlike many of the other impersonators who are "lookalikes" she didn't study voice and acting simply to be called a tribute artist.

"Imitating Streisand became an acting job.  So many movies have been made where famous actors immerse themselves into their movie character and then tell a life story of the real person.  I simply do the same, but on stage", said Owens.

Soon after starting out as a dynamic mimic of the incomparable Streisand, Sharon began to take the comedy routine more seriously.  She honed her Brooklyn accent, studied Barbra's intense vocal sounds and spent hours recreating her look with gorgeous gowns.  In the 15 years of her career, she has been featured on Entertainment Tonight and in People Magazine.

In addition to performing solo, Sharon and her business partner, Sebastian Anzaldo have an international show entitled Barbra and Frank, The Concert That Never Was!

A funny story from this Funny Girl:

"My youngest son, Chad, when he was in kindergarten in Las Vegas, told his teacher that his mom was Barbra Streisand.  When I went to the first parent/teacher conference, the teacher was ready with her camera! Of course, to be totally confused when I arrived.  My oldest son attended many of my early concerts. He's the only child I know who could bring a picture of himself and Elvis to his classroom's Show and Tell.  Both my boys are the only 2 kids in the world who knew all the words to People", said Owens.

"It is an honor to tribute such an amazing, talented, gifted and giving philanthropist. A woman who paved the way for so many women who dare to dream big."

"If you are a fan or not, you will be a fan of Sharon when the show is over."

Btw, Sharon is exactly one month older than Jason Elliot Gould, Streisand's son by actor, Elliot Gould.

This Chautauqua Lake Pops storefront in Mayville NY was set up last summer with its colorful street level framed Pops posters and welcoming bright blue/white awning to create a welcoming main street presence.  During these uncertain times I thought this photo would provide hope that the Pops and all we have come to enjoy in the county will continue though it may not be .. just around the corner.  I will remain positive and accept whatever the Pops decision is .. going forward.  For now, we all have gathered many wonderful memories that began in Bemus Point and continued last summer in Mayville.  In th meantime, I will continue to bring you Pops memories on this blog through the written word and selected photos.

On the wall inside the Pops office are these words by Phineas Taylor Barnum .. "The noblest art is that of making others happy".   Barnum (July 5, 1810-April 7, 1891) was an American showman, politician and businessman remembered for founding the Barnum and Bailey Circus (1871-2017).

The quote at the end of the movie, The Greatest Showman was "No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else."

The owners of this bright red Mini Cooper always referred to this parking space as .. the pole position.  It is a term used in motorsport racing given to the lead car at the start of a race such as the Indianapolis 500.  The owners have sold this "rollerskate on wheels" as Mike Ferguson used to say and the Indy 500 won't be run this May due to COVID-19.  The more things change, the more they stay the same is a familiar saying though with a global pandemic among us now .. life has forever changed as we knew it.  We will be returning to a .. new normal.  I sincerely hope that we will come out of this stronger and more understanding of each other.  We are all in this together, as one.

Those of us who frequented the Italian Fisherman and the Bemus Bay Pops through the years have sweet memories whether it was enjoying dinner while looking out at a stunning Bemus Bay sunset, watching an evening concert among the stars in the sky and on the floating stage or enjoying a Sunday afternoon performance .. where the music met the Bemus Bay water creating a beautiful blend of memories for all of us, now.  I, personally, recall one special Sunday afternoon on July 6, 2014 .. a smooth jazz concert with sax player, Vincent Ingala who was Artist of the Year 2012 & 2013.  That afternoon I met a group of ladies who had traveled from Vincent's hometown, Prospect Connecticut to Bemus Point NY.  The mileage is 436.2 miles, by car!  Now those are avid fans of a great tenor saxophone player!

Mike with Frank Porpiglia

Mike is the man behind the microphone on the floating stage and introduces each tribute band and tribute singer who arrives at the Chautauqua Lake Pops from throughout the United States and Canada.  When Mike is not on the Pops stage he takes his microphone and mingles among the crowd asking "Where ya' from?"

"I am thrilled to have been Dan Dalpra's "sidekick" for over 10 years now.  Besides tossing jokes around and announcing acts on America's original and most unique stage he has become one of my best friends and confidants.  Face to face or on the phone we must have solved all of the world's problems 10 times over throughout the years.  I don't know what the 2020 summer season will bring though I do know we're hoping to take the stage again", said Ferguson.

"Mike has been a strong supporter of the community for as long as I have known him.  His participation with our Pops program has been stellar.  He was a natural fit with us and we are blessed to have him in the mix.  They say "a real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out".  Once Mike walked in he never left!  We both believe in vision and opportunity for our community.  I am grateful for his friendship and dedication.  Remember, good friends don't let you do stupid things alone.  Together, we will continue to work hard to move the Pops forward for all to enjoy", said Dalpra.

When Mike isn't carrying out his announcing duties in the county and at the Pops he is Director of Sales, Marketing and Culture Development at Fredonia Place.  Fredonia Place is a full care senior living facility in Fredonia NY.  They recently opened a new facility in Williamsville NY.

Prior to his current employment Mike was a morning show host with 96KIX FM and WDOE; Director of Promotions and Marketing for Lake Erie Speedway; General Manager of the Jamestown Jammers; Director of Marketing, PR and Branding for Merritt Winery; Director of Marketing, PR and official announcer for the Chautauqua County Fair; Executive Director/General Manager for the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena; Past President and former board member of the Chautauqua County Visitor's Bureau; United States Pickleball Association Ambassador; Gamma Pickleball Brand Ambassador; touring pro with Professional Racquetball; President/General Manager with Buffalo Blizzard (professional Soccer) and former Vice President/General Manager with the Wichita Wings in Wichita Kansas (professional soccer).

Mike was chairperson of the Citizen's Advisory Board created by the former County Executive, George Borello prior to Mr. Borello becoming Senator Borello.

During several summers in Bemus Point Mike was fundraising chairperson for Shults Auto Group's Car on the Barge Campaign.  When there wasn't a new car on the barge next to the floating stage there was a new boat on the barge giving one lucky raffle ticket holder the chance to win.  Holiday Harbor Marina located in Celoron was the sponsor of the boat raffle.

Mike was Co-Producer of the Chautauqua Lake The Choice at the Bemus Bay Pops and is currently Co-Producer of the Chautauqua Lake Pops in Mayville NY.

Mike and his wife, Dianne live in Fredonia.  Dianne is a volunteer coordinator for the Chautauqua Lake Pops.

One of the special sights and sounds on Chautauqua Lake each summer is the steamer with the bright red paddlewheel named the Chautauqua Belle.  The Belle, as she is affectionately called, is an authentic double deck Mississippi riverboat complete with its gingerbread trim and a wedding cake stacked superstructure which is indigenous to the Mississippi River-styled steamboat.  The design features many of the architectural details lost to the modern boat builder like cambered decks to shed water from her roof and a sheer line to evenly distribute the weight of the boilers, engines and paddlewheel. This style of deck layout, which became the pinnacle of all steamboat architecture, was pioneered by Henry Shreve and his steamboat Washington of 1824.  The vessel featured a barge-built hull which allowed the steamboat to carry immense weight while maintaining a shallow draft for navigation on the shallow inland rivers.  Each summer the Belle travels to the historic steamboat turn-around at McCrea Point Park boat landing in Jamestown via the Chadakoin River.

The Chadakoin is a 7.8 mile long waterway that is a tributary of the Conewango Creek.  The Chadakoin lies entirely in Chautauqua County.  The creek begins at the southern end of Chautauqua Lake and its watershed is bounded to the North by the Chautauqua Ridge, a continental divide that results in the water flowing eventually to the Gulf of Mexico rather than the nearby Great Lakes.

The Belle was launched in 1976 as part of the Chautauqua County's celebration of the United States Bicentennial.  She is 98 feet long, has a 22 foot beam, draws 30", weighs 70 tons fully loaded, carries a crew of 7 and has a capacity of 120 passengers.  Her top speed of 7 miles per hour is provided by a pair of 20 HP Johnston steam boilers, built by Harry McBride in 1975.  These boilers turn the vessel's impressive red paddlewheel.

The Belle is one of only 5 operating steamboats in North America which includes Queen of Seattle in WA, Minne-Ha-Ha in Lake George NY, Belle of Louisville in Louisville KY on the Ohio River and the Natchez in New Orleans on the Mississippi River.

She was designed by naval architect Captain Alan Bates of Louisville KY as was the riverboat, Natchez. It was originally financed and built by Captain James Webster in Mayville NY between 1974 and 1976.  The Belle's maiden voyage was on July 4, 1976.

The Chautauqua Belle is currently operated under the ownership of Mat Stage, Chief Operating Officer of Maple Springs NY.  Mat purchased the Belle in 2007 and made the needed maintenance upgrades.  "The Chautauqua Belle continues to be close to my heart.  It has taught me so much that I use while at sea, but more importantly it has brought me closer to the local community which allows me to work everyday with family and friends whom I love", said Stage.  Mat is an officer on the cruise ship, Oceania which sails the Mediterranean Sea.

The Belle operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day and into the early Fall season traversing both the North and South basins of Chautauqua Lake.  Featured excursions run from her home port in Mayville NY to Chautauqua Institution and Bemus Point.  Many different cruises are offered throughout the season such as historical cruises, fireworks cruises, cocktail cruises, BBQ chicken dinner cruises, moonlight cruises and Fall foliage cruises.

The photo featured with this story depicts the Belle when it would pay a visit to the Pops when it was located in Bemus Point NY.  The Belle could be precisely maneuvered between the many boats in the bay to be seen passing directly behind the floating stage.  It was a sight and sound to behold when she would come by with passengers waving from its decks.  To officially announce her presence the Captain would blow the deep sounding steam whistle from the wheelhouse as she glided by folks having dinner on the deck of the Italian Fisherman, enjoying a summer cocktail on the Fish Tank or sitting on the floating Chill Lounge near the dock leading to the floating stage.

Practicing Social Distancing

As we continue to cope with COVID-19 these words spoken by Pope Francis are full of hope.

"Tonight before falling asleep think about when we will return to the street. When we hug again, when all the shopping together will seem like a party.  Let's think about when the coffees will return to the bar, the small talk, the photos close to each other.  We think about when it will be all a memory but normalcy will seem an unexpected and beautiful gift.  We will love everything that has so far seemed futile to us.  Every second will be precious.  Swims at the sea, the sun until late, sunsets, toasts, laughter.  We will go back to laughing together. Strength and courage."

The tranquil photo with this post is of the floating stage several years ago in Bemus Point prior to the start of another great Pops concert season.  The only man in the photo sitting in a chair enjoying the view as the sun was setting is a man name Gus.  Gus worked for the Pops and for the Italian Fisherman.  His first name was not Gus though his last name was Gustafson so everybody knew him simply as .. Gus.

I captured this Pops moment of Gus relaxing on a chair during a Sunday afternoon concert.  Gus was a behind-the-scenes type of guy, a man of few words though we all knew he was the one who really kept the Bemus Bay Pops running, smoothly.  Thanks Gus.

The floating stage has been a visible entity in Chautauqua County since 2003. Some of us have had the experience of standing or even performing on the 60 X 60 platform structure with its massive metal and fabric canopy. Perhaps you have spotted the stage traversing the lake in early Spring to its Summer destination or in late Fall when it returns to a local marina for its winter hibernation.  When Dan Dalpra decided to take the Bemus Bay Pops symphonic orchestra conducted by the late Bruce Morton Wright off the roof of the Italian Fisherman prior to Labor Day weekend he placed the talented musicians onto the stage that floats to the continued delight of his audiences.

The tribute bands who have performed through the years love the experience and enjoy entertaining spectators from a unique venue surrounded by water.  It's a 360 degree summer atmosphere of great music, special lighting and fireworks that many have described as .. simply magical.  A quote from Tony Ferrara who is a talented guitar player with The Groove based in Erie PA told me prior to The Groove performing on this stage in 2016 .. We can't wait to float". A great quote!

The Pops is a visionary production and marketing company dedicated to "bringing the arts to the people".  The floating stage is a unique concept in recreation and entertainment where the performance floats right before your very eyes!  In the early years, the stage did not have a section that brought performers closer to the audience.  Eventually, the stage was extended which allowed the performers an "up close and personal" experience with the audience and visa versa.

The floating stage joins the ranks with another floating stage located in Singapore, The Float at Marina Bay.  It is the largest floating stage in the world.

The Chautauqua Lake Pops floating stage is a unique stage in recreation and entertainment where the performance floats before your eyes!

Ladies and Gentlemen,  I present to you .. Anthony "Tony" Horvath.  He competed on the floating stage in Bemus Point during the Bemus Bay Pops signing competition entitled Chautauqua Lake The Choice.  He became one of the 5 finalists along with Liz Osborne who is now with Osborne/Nash. The other contestants that year were Angel Rodrigues, Ryan Buzzetto and Eric Wilbon.  Eric, a music student at SUNY Fredonia took the title that year.  The Choice was presented in 2015 and 2016.  It was to empower, inspire and mentor talent.

Anthony is from Columbiana, Ohio and loves to sing.  After his first appearance on the floating stage he enjoyed a dinner with friends in the Italian Fisherman.  During the competition he met many locals including my husband and myself.  Upon leaving the restaurant that night he told his girlfriend, Christine .. "I've already won".  When Anthony told me this during a recent phone conversation I knew exactly what he meant. He simply didn't enter the contest to win he just wanted to experience singing on the floating stage after letting the Lord enter his life. By doing so it allowed him to receive a spiritual message .. Go out, young man and proclaim your faith in me and love of music through song where ever you find it. During that summer he found it .. on a stage that floats!

For this interview I asked Anthony what it was like to be on that stage in 2016! His response was "I was at peace, not nervous.  Ask and you shall receive.  God will take you to the highest of highs if you believe in Me."

Anthony was "flying" and "soaring like an eagle" that summer in Bemus Point NY.

Anthony's mother, Louise has always been an uplifting inspiration in his life as was his late father, Fred.  He was Anthony's hero.  As a young boy he was the shy child in the family though Anthony loved to imitate many famous singers such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka and Johnny Cash.  Later in life at one of his mother's birthday celebrations his siblings gave her many beautiful material gifts though Anthony's gift to his mother was to sing Volare, in Italian, from his heart.  He performed it with no musical accompaniment (acapella). Volare was recorded and released in 1961 by Domenico Modugno.  In the lyrics there is a familiar line .. Nel Blu' Dipinto Di Blu'.  The translation is "in the blue painted blue". Anthony's special gift of song was given to his Mom on her 77th birthday!  Another Italian recording artist who performed Volare was Dean Martin. The word, Volare is the Latin and Italian verb to fly.  The word, cantare means to sing of.  Another Italian, Al Martino recorded Volare in 1976 with a unique uptempo rhythm.

"No wonder my happy heart sings your love has given me wing".

Since the world has been coping with COVID-19 Anthony has been performing concerts via the internet.  On Easter Sunday he could be found entertaining his many friends and family through an Italian themed concert from his home. He truly sings with the love of the Lord in his heart.  He tells me that he doesn't speak Italian though he can hear a song in Italian and can then sing it! He calls it .. divine intervention.

Thank you Anthony for coming to Bemus Point that summer and sharing with us your God-given talent, your infectious laughter and your warm genuine smile.  Since visiting Chautauqua County and sharing his singing talent with all of us Anthony sings at local venues in Ohio including several Ohio wineries.  One of them is The Vineyards at Pine Lake located at 14101 Market Street in Columbiana.  Hopefully, Anthony will return to singing outside of his home in the near future.

As a warm footnote, Anthony explained to me how he met the lovely lady in his life named Christine. When he told her that he was a singer he proceeded to sing, Slow Dancin' by Johnny Rivers.  He began singing the words "and we're slow dancin', swayin' to the music".  Suddenly he forgot the second line "slow dancin', just me and my girl".  They both laughed when they realized the words included "just me and my girl".  It wasn't long before Christine did become .. his girl.

"Slow dancin', swayin to the music
No one else in the whole wide world just you, girl".

Slow Dancin' was released in 1977.  Sweet memories for many a couple swayin' in the high school gym after a football game, back then. My high school had a vintage jukebox that would be rolled out from the coach's office so I, too, recall this song and slow dancin'.  As with many teenage girls, my age, we all had a crush on Johnny Rivers!

This amazing and highly skilled pyramid by the Chippewa Ski Team was seen during several Bemus Bay Pops summer seasons and is probably the most photographed moment by spectators. The group is Ohio's only competitive water ski show team.  Their "home lake" is in Medina on beautiful Emerald Lake.

The team was formed in 1997 and is sanctioned by the US Water Ski Association.  Among the many types of water skiing are slalom, barefoot, doubles, swivel, ballet, wakeboard, jumps, hydrofoil, tricks and show skis.

The Choice was part of the Pops with Media One Group SE 93 for 2 years when the program was in Bemus Point.  Michael Ferguson, the official Pops announcer traveled throughout the county and into the Buffalo and Erie markets to locate qualified singing contestants.  Prior to this phase Dan Dalpra, Pops Founder and CEO, recruited Artone Furniture By Design and its president, Michael Calimeri to build 4 chairs as seen on the TV show, The Voice. There were 6 competition dates including the exciting finale.  Prizes were valued at over $10,000 which included $1,000 in cash and studio recording time to the announced winner.  In 2015, the winner was Dallas Marsh and in 2016, the winner was Eric Wilbon.

Artone Furniture By Design located in Jamestown NY is a world class second generation commercial furniture manufacturer specializing in senior care, hotel and retail store fixtures.  They are pleased to be part of the community having celebrated over 40 years in the area. Besides having supported the Pops they continue to show their support for other local organizations such as the National Comedy Center, the Chautauqua Regional Community Foundation and Special Spaces of Buffalo.

"We try to share everything we can with all of our employees.  There were more than 50 Pops events during the 2015 season.  With almost 100 employees at Artone we encouraged our employees to attend the shows and posted a spread sheet listing all of the concerts.  My employees could choose the event(s) they wanted to attend and help fill our 6 sponsor seats each weekend", said Michael Calimeri. During the years the Pops was in Bemus Point, Artone brought customers, sales representatives and prospective clients to the Pops events.

In my 2015 interview with Mr. Calimeri he told me that he and Dan go way back prior to the floating stage when the Pops was on the roof.  Dan shared his vision of expanding the Pops, having a floating stage, bringing in bands and the Light Up the Lakes concept over the 4th of July and Labor Day weekends.  Calimeri saw the Pops as something for the folks in the area to attend and felt it was an awesome idea.  They saw it come to fruition over the years.  "Anytime we had an opportunity to support Dan .. we certainly did."

During a conversation between Dan and Michael, Dan learned Artone had purchased a company that manufactured metal chairs.  Dan kept this information along with the idea of special chairs for Chautauqua Lake Choice in the back of his mind.  When the thought of building chairs for the 4 judges to mimic the popular television show came to become a possible reality, Dan reached out to Michael and asked  .. "Is this something that would be of interest to you?"

Under the guidance of Bob Bennington, founder of the acquired company Artone then set out to manufacture a special metal structured chair, in red!  Artone used the same materials though in a different shape.  With the history Artone had with the Pops Calimeri said .."Sure Dan, we'll do the chairs. We'll be part of this".

Designs and renderings evolved with communications that went back and forth to make sure everything was just right!  Mr. Bennington brought upholstery knowledge to the project and they all worked with the concrete company to make sure the chair bases were placed correctly to support the 4 special swivel red chairs.  In the end, they "fit like a glove".

"So, that's how it all came about. The project stemmed from our relationship of seeing great things being accomplished.  We, at Artone, have been very fortunate to be a successful company because none of this can happen without money.  Things just cost money, whether we donate the money or whether it's an in-kind contribution.  In this particular case, we donated the chairs while paying our employees to do the work.  Making the chairs was probably a 6-month process which included the actual inception, the meetings and the trial and error.  Our company worked part-time on the chairs as we were in the middle of regular production with other products.  Dan started talking about the project in the winter of 2014 and the chairs were ready in May of 2015.  That's the chair story!  A really great one between Artone and the Bemus Bay Pops.  Just another one of Dan's visions that I've seen .. come to life", said Calimeri.

As a footnote, each swivel chair had a sponsor.  They were ERA Team VP Real Estate, Ellicottville Brewing Company, Holiday Harbor and Shults Auto Group.

Lorrie Morgan appeared on the Bemus Bay Pops floating stage on August 5, 2016.  After her show she posed in the Italian Fisherman with Dan Dalpra for this fun photo.

Loretta Lynn Morgan is an American country music singer and was born June 27, 1959.  She is the daughter of the late, George Morgan who was also a country music artist. George was a long-time member of the Grand Ole Opry, a connection that enabled Lorrie to grow up around a troupe of famous role models.  It's only a coincidence, though, that Morgan has the same name as "the Coal Miner's Daughter."  Morgan was born and named in 1959, a year before the other Loretta first surfaced on radio and then on the Opry.

George Morgan, who died in 1975 and was inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998, was best known from bringing smooth pop stylings to his country hits such as Candy Kisses, Room Full of Roses and Almost.  Indeed, he was brought to the Opry after another crooner, Eddy Arnold, departed the show.

Morgan has been active as a singer since the age of 13 and charted her first single in 1979 with Two People in Love.  That single made it only to No. 75 and it would be 11 years and four different record labels until she scored her first No. 1 hit with Five Minutes on RCA.  She achieved her greatest success between 1988 and 1999 recording for RCA Records Nashville.  Her first two RCA albums, Leave the Light On and Something Red were certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Trainwreck of Emotion, written by Jon Vezner and Alan Rhody was recorded by Lorrie.  It was released in December 1988 as the first single from the album Leave the Light On.  The song reached No. 20 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.  Reflections: Greatest Hits was her best-selling album. Lorrie is a member of the Grand Old Opry.  Her musical style is defined largely by country pop influences and her dramatic singing voice with frequent stylistic comparisons to the late Tammy Wynette.

From 1990 through 1997 she turned out a steady stream of No. 1s and Top 5s among them We Both Walk, Watch Me, Out of Her Shoes, He Talks to Me, What Part of No, Except for Monday, I didn't Know My Own Strength and Good As I Was to You.

In 1993, she and Willie Nelson were the only country acts to record with Frank Sinatra on his Duets II album.  She and Sinatra paired on the medley How Do You Keep the Music Playing and My Funny Valentine.

Morgan continues to tour and to appear on the Grand Ole Opry where she has been a member since 1984.  Her most recent album, a collaboration with Pam Tillis titled Come See Me and Come Lonely was released in 2017.

Lorrie is one of the few country stars actually born in Nashville.

Diane Bergholtz is a good friend of the Dalpra family having met them through her late son, Marty who was a bartender at the Italian Fisherman for many years.  She was always surrounded by music in her life.  Both of Diane's parents played instruments.  Her mother played piano and her father enjoyed playing fiddle and accordion.  The family always had a piano in their home and she began taking lessons as a young child.

She grew up in Little Valley NY. At some point in her school's history there was no band director.  The summer after Diane completed the 4th grade a gentleman was hired and he began giving lessons to everyone having signed up to learn an instrument. She began on a silver, metal Bb clarinet.  Everyone was in the senior band so from the 5th grade until she graduated, band was part of her daily life.  As the school purchased more instruments, she was assigned to play the Eb alto clarinet.  She played that clarinet until she returned to playing the Bb clarinet.  Her school was small though they had excellent instructors and reached the goal of achieving a 6A rating in competition each year.  The band played music by excellent composers allowing Diane to appreciate and learn a great deal about music history.

While in high school Diane was chosen to attend many All County conferences and even 2 State conferences playing under the direction of some well-known college conductors.  It gave her the chance to meet students from other schools with similar interests therefore developing many friendships.  Through the years Diane also learned to play several other instruments such as the baritone saxophone, bassoon, french horn and percussion.  She also played in the dance band that was formed at her school.

Diane played during her college years, but it wasn't until Chautauqua Central School put on their one and only musical, Oklahoma that allowed her to return to playing. Eventually, she joined the Jamestown Municipal Band and still plays with that group of talented musicans at the summer concerts in Allen Park.

Another music related opportunity that extended into Diane's adult life was when the Windjammers Inc., a group dedicated to keeping circus music alive, came to Jamestown and presented a concert on the floating stage.  At that point, Diane knew that she wanted to join them and find other places to play.

Diane is a member of the Regional Membership Coordinator for New York State Association of Concert Bands. This group has members from the United States and assemble once a year at various venues to hear some of the best community bands in the area comprised of 100-120 participants.  The conductor is usually a well-known conductor or a retired military person.  There are also 8-12 other bands chosen through audition tapes that perform so one hears the .. best of the best!  The conference is a week of hearing fine music, learning new information from those organizing clinics and a wonderful way to socialize among fellow musicians.  Diane also plays at a weekend musical in Williamsport, PA each year.  Colonel Arnald D. Gabriel, retired USAF is our outstanding conductor. The Colonel was the Commander and Conductor from the United States Air Force Band, United States Air Force Symphony Orchestra and Singing Sergeants from 1964 to 1985.  In 1990, he was named the first Conductor Emeritus of the USAF Band and the 29th DIV Band of the Virginia Army National Guard.  He was inducted into the National Band Association Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band Conductors, becoming the youngest person ever to have received this honor. Colonel Gabriel was born May 31, 1925 in Cortland, NY.

There are many places to play now and one just has to pick and choose where they might want to go .. Colorado, Las Vegas or where a meet is being held.  Among Diane's other opportunities to play each summer is with the New Horizons Band at the State University of New York, SUNY Fredonia.

Diane lived in Bemus Point from 1990 until last Fall and had the privilege of working in three of the restaurants as a hostess and as a waitress. Because of her interest in music she was delighted when innovative and creative musicans, with the idea of being posed to them by Dan Dalpra, developed the concept of the Bemus Bay Pops.  The first 5 concerts were held on the roof of the Italian Fisherman!  At that time whe was working at the Surf Club.  Between afternoon shifts Diane would enjoy the dress rehearsal since she was scheduled to work while the performance was being presented to the general public.  She heard through the grapevine that it was Dan's birthday!  As she was listening to the rehearsal she thought .. what a perfect opportunity for so many to hear live music and provide an exciting way to wrap up the summer season with a magnificent Labor Day weekend concert.  On that very afternoon, Diane decided to enclose a small check in her birthday card to Dan leaving it with the hostess at the Italian Fisherman.  Sometimes you never know what a small gesture may mean to someone.  She had assumed that others had donated money to the project since she knew it was backed by many of the area corporations and local businesses, but Diane was surprised to learn she was the first individual to do so.  Diane certainly believed in the Pops project then and is still a strong believer in its continuance.  The high caliber of musicans and entertainment that people have had the chance to enjoy throughout the 20+ years is truly remarkable!

"We are very lucky to have people like Dan Dalpra who are willing to take chances and pursue worthwhile dreams for our entertainment", said Bergholtz.

In this troublesome time one of the groups Diane is involved with adopted the motto, MUSIC IS LIFE.  Because of this group many have been able to continue pursuing their extraordinary talents.  Orchestras have introduced their music to people who might never have had the chance to experience it. Music is truly the UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. Music can relieve our stress and help us to get through this difficult time in our lives.

Diane truly hopes we can relax by the lake this summer and continue to take advantage of the Chautauqua Lake Pops by enjoying time with friends while listening to outstanding musical performances.  The Pops concert series will continue BRINGING THE ARTS TO THE PEOPLE.

Diane Bergholtz is pleased the floating stage has now been relocated to Mayville, the county seat, giving others in that area an opportunity to experience the local and visiting talent who come from across the country and Canada to perform on a floating stage at the Chautauqua Lake Pops.

Jimmy and the Soul Blazers are an American soul, funk, rhythm and blues band from Alliance, Ohio.  Since 1966 they have played for audiences across the East Coast and Midwest. Among the locations for many years was on the floating stage in Bemus Point for local fans and for the group of fans who came from the band's home base in Ohio.  At the end of each show they would invite fans to join them onstage to lock arms and sing, With A Little Help From My Friends.  I recall this moment very well because one year I, myself, joined them on stage for a thrill of a lifetime.  I even joined Bill McCrea at his microphone.

Think how long ago 1966 was.  That's how long Jimmy Korleski has been leading Jimmy and the Soul Blazers.  "It's very heartwarming and humbling," Korleski said of the band's ability to still draw a crowd after 50 years.  Prior to a concert in Ohio a few years ago Jimmy said those attending can expect to hear much of the same music that the band has been serving up for years:  "Alot of Motown, Temptations, Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves and Smokey Robinson.  We still do some Joe Cocker, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Earth Wind & Fire."

The original band lineup was Dave Sorge on guitar, John Fugate on bass, Mike  "Puggy" Durutta on sax, Bill McCrea on bongo drums and vocals with Jimmy as frontman.  McCrea, a drummer was brought to the band's front line to be a vocalist-percussionist. There have been several keyboardists over the years with three horn players as well as Brian Burse on trumpet, Dave Kolinski-Schultz on sax and flute with Bob Hoefler on trombone.

"All five of the original guys have been with us until recently, but now we're a couple guys down due to medical issues and one lives in Texas," Korleski said.  "When they can come, they come."

In an interview found online with Korleski he talks about his life of soul-blazing.

Do you see an end in sight for Jimmy and the Soul Blazers now that you're 70?

"If we're having fun and we do it well, we'll keep going.  Those two things need to be in place.  Just because the age numbers go up, we don't want the energy to go down.  We still push ourselves to do it well.  People will say sometimes, 'What are you doing tonight?' I say, "I have rehearsal, and they say, 'You guys rehearse?'  At this late date, I take it as a privilege.  I go out and go after it. I'm not one of those guys who thinks we live on your laurels."

What were the early days of the band like?

"We were five pieces doing rhythm annd blues.  We were blessed that crowds came to see us and danced.  I was probably 19, the others were two or three years younger.  A lot of us went to the same grade school, St. Joseph's in Alliance.  I went to Canton Central School Catholic, the other guys were all at Alliance High School.  We were playing much of the same soul music we do now, we covered a wide genre, all the things that were real big at the time.  I was very much into harmonies.  We had alot of flexibility in terms of desire and, God bless us, talent."

Do you have fans who have been with you the entire journey?

"We absolutely do.  We've been blessed over the years, especially as time goes on.  People come to see you, I never take that for granted.  We played for alot of their weddings, and their kids' weddings, and now some of their grandkids are showing up.  We joke about it, they're like third-generation.  I never looked at it as just an audience.  It's like your extended family. They feel close to us and we feel close to them."

Dan Dalpra, founder and CEO of the Pops grew up with the group. "They played for my high school graduation party and were always the favorite band in the Canton/Alliance Ohio area.  Jimmy and the Soulblazers can still deliver on a quality sound.  It sure would be fun to someday bring them all back together onto the floating stage", said Dalpra.

Jimmy and the Soulblazer fans would agree!

Amy Webb is the wife of Ben Webb and mother of their two children, Teagan and Cord.  Since the Pops came to Mayville they have been a Pops sponsor.  Last summer they provided food deliveries to the Pops site and attended all the concerts with Ben and Amy's parents, Jim and Sally Webb along with Steve and MarySue Pawlak.

Amy always has a smile on her face and is very involved in her children's education and well being.  She is currently employed as the Committee on Special Education (CSE) Chairperson at Westfield Academy and Central School.  She began serving as a Chautauqua Lake School Board member in 2015 and is currently the President of the School Board.  While schools are currently out during this pandemic she is optimistic and hopeful to be back into the school building in May!  She encourages families to spend time together and enjoy the beautiful outdoors around us.  She plans on bringing her family to as many Pops concerts and events as possible this summer!

The photo featured with this story shows Amy (pictured on the left) with Nicole Goodman enjoying a Pops disco concert. I know Amy and despite the health situation we all face she remains positive for herself and the entire Webb family.

Many locals know Joyce Lewallen as the gal who owns and operates the deli in Hartfield NY from April through October each Spring, Summer and Fall season.  Last year she was asked by Dan Dalpra to join the food and beverage vendors at the Chautauqua Lake Pops in Mayville NY.

The self-proclaimed "Jerzy Girl" moved to our county from Island Heights NJ on September 28, 1973 with her parents, Frank and Barbara along with her siblings to open a delicatassen like the one they owned and operated in NJ by the same name, Olde Corner Deli.  Her brother, Larry worked at the store for the first 30 years as did 4 of the 6 children through the years. Joyce's father passed 5 years ago and her mother, now 85, resides in Florida doing well with all of her children.

To this day, Joyce continues to offer a delicious lunch menu which includes her well-known "sub" sandwiches.  The Olde Corner Deli is located in a quaint white clapboard building dating back to 1830 complete with a welcoming "come sit a spell" front porch.  Red picnic tables are provided on the side yard for folks to enjoy their lunch as locals stop in or drive by in their cars, trucks, Amish wagons and even an occasional hay wagon.  This April, she will continue to serve the community though by what is now being called 'curbside' just as other area restaurants are doing throughout the country due to the Coronavirus.  A virus that has truly changed our daily lives with the new terms 'social distancing' and 'shelter-in-place'.  Despite these uncertain times, Joyce will be there for us all with a warm smile and an encouraging word while preparing our delicious subs to go with a cold soda pop and a bag of chips.  Jerzey Joyce winters in Florida, but is always anxious to get back to work in Hartfield.  "Coming back every Spring is truly coming home.  You can take the girl out of Jersey, but you can't take the 'Jerzy' out of the girl!", says 'Jerzy Joyce'.

Joyce is a positive person who delights in spreading good vibes.  By being a true supporter of the Chautauqua Lake Pops she has been a positive voice for the program since its arrival in Mayville behind the historic train depot.  She is truly a Pops cheerleader! Last summer she would always arrive in a fun and colorful outfit that matched the musical era performed by each talented tribute band on the "stage that floats".  During the disco night concert our Joyce appeared in red leather pants as we all "got down" to the sounds of Boogie Wonderband direct from Montreal Canada!  Last summer at the Pops she served up many entrees including meatballs slowly simmered in the 13 ingredient homemade sauce.  The sauce pot (5 gallon Army Surplus) belonging to her grandmother is used to prepare the delicious meatballs.  She also offered homemade "peanut butter balls" covered in chocolate better known to Ohioians as Buckeyes.

"God willing and the creek don't rise" as my late father used to say .. we'll be able  to continue with the 2020 summer concert series to the delight of Pops supporters .. of all ages.

Go to the Pops website to view the upcoming season full of excitement that is sure to please everyone who loves music from Country to Rock to Motown.

This young man's name is Michael Ross Nugent.  Many of you may remember him as the 2012 Chautauqua Lake Voices winner.  He is now a 26 year old professional vocalist and entertainer.  Michael grew up in Lancaster NY, a suburb of Buffalo.  He is the first person I have chosen to be featured on this blog about the Pops through the years.  His heartfelt thoughts are below for all of you.  Thank you, Michael.

Music has always been a major part of my life for I have played trombone since I was 9 years old.  After graduating from high school I decided to take vocal lessons to explore what my voice could do.  I had no idea that singing would become my profession and I am fortunate to say that I have been performing full-time since 2014.  I moved to Las Vegas in 2019 to continue my career after 5 years of performing in Western New York State.

Chautauqua Lake has a special place in my heart for many reasons.  My father's side of the family lives in Chautauqua County so it's like my second home.  I spent countless summers on my uncle's boat, many Fall seasons staying at Chautauqua Institution with my grandparents and celebrating numerous holidays.  The Fourth of July weekend was always something I looked forward to in Bemus Point.  My family and I really enjoyed the Bemus Bay Pops and attended many concerts on the lawn of the Italian Fisherman.

I was very fortunate to be part of the 2012 (WWSE 93.3 FM) SE93 Chautauqua Lake Voices singing competition. My uncle who lives in Jamestown called me in the Spring of 2012 to tell me about the contest since he had heard the advertisement on local radio.  Along with 19 other contestants I was given the chance to perform on the floating stage that summer for the patrons of the Bemus Bay Pops.  I will never forget how exhilarating it was to sing for the large crowd with beautiful Bemus Bay in the background.

I was competing against a group of singers with incredible talent with many fans showing up each week to cheer on their favorite contestant.  The competition lasted several weeks and I was blessed to eventually be announced the winner that summer.  At the Labor Day finale concert I was honored to sing Feelin' Good by Michael Buble with the Chautauqua Lake Pops Symphony Orchestra. It was truly a magical night.

My singing career began on that unique floating stage in Bemus Point, a very special and quaint lake village.  I will never forget that experience!

Community and music are so important to the people of Chautauqua County whether it be at the Pops, now relocated in Mayville NY since 2019 or throughout the many music venues in the County.

The Bemus Bay Pops provided an amazing opportunity for me in 2013 and I am forever thankful.  The Pops brings everyone of all ages together for fun and music.
